Our Stand Out Hair Looks from the Met Gala 2017

From the outfits to the hair styles the Met Gala has always been one of our most looked forward to fashion events at Hession Hairdressing. We love seeing our favourite celebrities throwing caution to the wind and taking some serious risks with their hair styles! Check out some of our top picks from last nights event below – how many would you be brave enough to try??

Lily Collins

We’re loving this edgy gothic look on the usually sweet as pie Lily Collins. Short, blunt and super striking – top marks from us!

Kate Hudson

W’re so glad to see Kate mixing things up a bit this year, ditching her famous golden  locks for a cool ice blonde!

Rita Ora

This elfin look on Rita Ora is ultimate hair goals! If we were Rita we’d burn the extensions and stick with this super flattering pixie cut!

Stella Maxwell

Stella is doing us Irish ladies proud with this flawless look. This romantic up-do oozes  elegance and sophistication!

Rose Byrne

We love a risk taker and Rose is just that with these brushed out curls. She pulls off this ‘1920’s flapper’ look like a complete pro!

Kylie Jenner

Sometimes less is more and this is definitely the case with Kylie’s simple but chic platinum blonde bob. Kylie’s hair is understated yet polished and lets her  showstopping dress do all the talking!

How to Get the Most Out of Your Hair Colour!

Get the most from your hair colour with our top tips!

Whether you’re blonde, brunette or redhead, coloured hair always requires extra care to keep it looking vibrant and fresh. Follow our top tips below  to get the most out of your colour!

TIPS FOR BLONDES 1. Firstly when colouring your hair blonde always have it done professionally in a salon. 2. Deep condition often. If you’ve lightened your hair to be blonde and want to avoid it looking dry,        use a deep conditioning treatment at least weekly to keep your hair hydrated. 3. Invest in a purple shampoo to prevent your hair colour from turning brassy which often happens with other shampoos that aren’t specifically formulated for blonde hair. 4. Get regular trims, blonde hair is more prone to breakage so you need to look after it.

TIPS FOR BRUNETTES 1. For beautiful shiny brunette hair whether coloured or natural, it is important that you keep it healthy. 2. Use professional products to maintain your hair in as they are specifically designed for your hair needs, and trim hair regularly. 3. Start by selecting the right shampoo and conditioner with the help of an expert in the salon. We recommend Kevin Murphy products and the Kerastase range. 4. When colouring your hair choosing a shade of brown that will suit your skin tone is the most important factor. Establish with your colourist whether to opt for a cool toned brown or a warm brown. Adding some highlights and lowlights underneath the hair will give it texture and multi tonal colour to soften your all over brunette colour.

TIPS FOR REDHEADS 1. This hair colour can be tricky to get right so if you’re not blessed with natural copper locks have a professional in a salon do it for you. 2. Wash your hair with sulfate-free, colour-safe shampoo and conditioner and rinse your hair with cool water to protect your hair from heat damage and add extra shine. 3. Use thermal protectant when heat styling your hair. This will dramatically reduce brittle and split ends. 4. Avoid the sun when possible – it’s always best to wear a hat in sunny weather and consider using a UV protectant spray for your hair. 5. Have a colour refresh service done in salon in between your root touch ups to keep your colour looking vibrant.

The Hottest Hair Looks from The Golden Globes 2017

It’s that time of year once again, awards season has kicked off and we’re glued to the red carpet for top notch hair and beauty inspiration! There were so many fabulous hair styles at this weeks Golden Globes it’s so hard to pick our favourites but here are a few that caught our eye!

Brie Larson

Brie’s gorgeous Hollywood waves are classic and timeless! We’ve seen a huge increase in demand for this style for Debs and special occasions and we can see why. We’re loving this sleek glossy look on Brie!

Emma Stone

Emma Stone’s undone up do was a firm favourite at the Golden Globes. This style looks so effortless and utterly elegant. We can see this becoming a popular look for bridesmaids in 2017.

Lily Collins

An up-do with  height and braids? What’s not to love?! This unusual style is eye catching and adds some edge to an otherwise very feminine look.

Ruth Negga

Our list would not be complete without Irish beauty Ruth Negga. Not everyone can pull off a cropped style like Ruth but she absolutely rocks it! Slick, minimalist and modern, this look is a total winner for us!

Our favourite looks from last night’s EMA Awards

Last night’s European Music Awards took place in Rotterdam. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber swept to victory in a ceremony that saw a tribute to the late singer Prince.

While we are delighted for the winners of the night, of course we were keeping a firm eye on what way attendees of the event were styling their hair and makeup for the night!

It is not unusual for a couple of crazy hairstyles to appear at the awards ceremony. It almost seems that when a music event takes place in Europe, it’s a licence to come up with the most unusual hairstyle one can think of. However, we’re happy to report that in fact most of the hairstyles (not necessarily the outfits!) were all very beautiful, classy and certainly one you can recreate at home.

Nina Dobrev

Nina hit the red carpet in a beautiful lavender halter dress. We loved the pairing of the purple smoky eye. However the neutral pink lip and low key face makeup ensured she looked natural rather than over the top. Her hairstyle was one that you could certainly pull off at home.

Due to her dramatic earrings and purple smoky eyes, Nina made the right decision in keeping her hairstyle simple. The classic centre part paired with sleek, shiny and glossy hair was the perfect ensemble for this outfit. Her hair looked simply healthy and neat!

Laura Whitmore

Of course we couldn’t forget to include our very own Irish beauty Laura Whitmore on our list. While we’re not 100% sure about the style of the dress we do love the autumnal colour and how Laura has perfectly matched this up with her lips and cheeks. A subtle smoky eye really makes her face pop.

Laura’s hair style is another classic look that you can recreate at home. With the flick of a curling wand or even some simple plaits, you’ve got beautiful curls at the ready!

Sonya Esman

Sonya turned up to the EMAs in a brown floral print dress, almost looking like she has just stepped out of a time machine having spent the past few days at Woodstock circa 1969. We think she can totally pull off this look!We love how her bold red lip takes centre stage for her makeup- almost a must when rocking such a colour.

Her hairstyle works perfectly with the hippy look her outfit is emulating. A comb here is your best friend! To recreate simply tie hair up into a ponytail, twist around so that hair is covering the bobbin and backcomb the tail (avoid over backcombing- a few brushes with the comb should be sufficient). Change your parting at the front to allow two pieces to hang down at the front and you’re ready to go!

We hope these looks have inspired your next hairstyle! We’d love to know what looks you were loving from last night.

Quick and Easy Festival Hairstyles for Electric Picnic

Break out your flower crowns, because festival season is well and truly upon us! And now that your suitcases are packed with your crop tops, sunnies, and clever graphic tees, it’s time to talk hair. We at Hessions Hairdressing have picked our fave styles for effortlessly cool festival styles you can do in a flash!

First up we have the undone braid -everyone knows that braids are always coolest when they’re messed up. We often spot this style on celebrities like Lea Michelle and Blake Lively. All you have to do to achieve the look is make a traditional French braid ( there are tonnes of tutorials on YouTube if you’re a newbie to braiding!), then pull it apart – don’t be too fragile with it, the more undone the better we say!  Secure it loosely at the ends while leaving some strands loose to add to your cool factor! The best thing about this style is that you don’t spend the day fixing your hair, the looser it gets the more it adds to the overall look!

Waves and curls are always a classic summer hairstyle and are an iconic Selena Gomez look. They’re the easiest because you can save time by letting your hair air dry after applying product, especially when you plan to be out in the sun all day.

To start, let your hair air-dry with a little detangling product to enhance your natural texture.  We love the entire Kerastase range! If your hair lacks a natural curl, spray a sea salt spray from roots to tips and roughly dry to build volume. Blow-dry the length of your hair while twisting sections with your fingers- make sure to aim the hairdryer downwards to avoid frizz! Once dry, wrap sections of hair around a wide barrelled curling tongs. Finally, make a deep side parting for futher ‘va va voom’ and finish with a spritz of hairspray.

Any festival goer worth their patterned wellies knows no fun festival hair style is complete without a bit of colour! For those unwilling to commit to the all over pastel hair colours rocking the celeb world, hair chalks are the perfect alternative! Add some playful rainbow streaks to brighten up your look or opt for a dip dye effect. Have some fun with it – that’s the beauty of temporary hair colour!

Finally, we have the classic high ponytail with floral accessories. No, it’s not a flower crown, in fact, it’s one better! Mostly because, once secured, the little flower pins will be harder to lose and a lot less annoying to wear all day.

To achieve this look, add some texturizing spray to your hair, pull into a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie. To hide the hair tie, take a strand of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around a few times then secure with a bobby pin. Finish the look off by attaching some small flowers in your hair.

Our Top Statement Hair Picks from the MET Gala 2016

This years MET Gala’s theme was Manus X Machina – Fashion in an Age of Technology, a theme which inspired some of the most daring and creative hairstyles we’ve seen on the red carpet in a long time!

Here are our top picks from the night:

CIARA

Ciara’s metallic silver encrusted hair perfectly embodied the MET Gala theme. We love that she decided to have some fun with her hair and try something different. Ciara’s silver hair and dress combo definitely stood her apart from the crowd!

TAYLOR SWIFT

Although not as daring as Ciara’s look, this vampy bob on Taylor Swift marks  a significant departure from her usual polished style so so she definitely earns points in that respect! Paired with an edgy dark lip and pale skin this tousled platinum blonde hairstyle reveals a side to Taylor we’ve never seen before!

LUPITA NYONG’O

Lupita’s ceiling scraping hair do was sure to turn heads last night. The stunning actress had a series of buns stacked vertically in her hair  to create a showstopping look. Lupita was right to keep her makeup minimal and let this spectacle do all the talking!

KYLIE JENNER

The phrase ‘less is more’ certainly rings true with Kylie Jenner’s simple hair style. This slick understated bob perfectly frames Kylie’s face and adds a touch of class to her overall look. Glossy healthy hair never goes out of style and perfectly compliments Kylie’s lavish diamante dress.

Emma Stone

Last night’s MET Gala presented the perfect opportunity for Emma Stone to debut her freshly dyed brunette locks. Emma’s new lopsided side swept bob is the perfect blend of modern and chic with hues of chestnut that compliment her skin tone beautifully. We love it!!

Quick and Easy Hairstyles for Spring

The Lazy Girl Guide to Spring Hair    With spring in full swing many people tend to spend a little less time on their tresses. Paul Hession re-creates three looks designed for quick on-the-go stylish women. The Headscarf

Start with your scarf wrapped around the back of your neck with the two loose ends at the top of your head above your forehead.

Cross these two ends over each other and twist so that they are tight.

Pull the ends tightly to the nape of your neck and secure them to the back of the scarf/ your hair with bobby pins.

The High Ruffled Ponytail

Brush your hair thoroughly.

Tease the hair on your crown slightly by lifting a small section of your hair about midway to the crown and backcombing gently to add volume.

Gather your hair into a high pony tail being careful not to flatten your crown and secure with a bobbin.

Gently loosen strands around your crown for a more relaxed look.

Run a curling tongs through the ponytail to add further volume and waves.

Finish with a spritz of texturizing hairspray.

The Braided Side Pony

Gather your brushed hair on the side of your neck you would like your ponytail.

Take a small section of hair  (about half an inch to an inch depending on the thickness of your hair)from the nape of your neck, along your hairline.

Split this small section into 3 even strands, form a braid and secure with a small clear elastic.

Pull the rest of your hair around the front of your shoulder and wrap the braid around it to form a ponytail.

Pin the end of the braid under your ponytail to secure – use several bobby pins for extra hold.

Oscars Red Carpet Hair Predictions for 2016

The looks we predict for this seasons 88th Academy Awards

Red carpet award ceremonies often showcase gowns which reflect the trends of the season, but almost all of the hairstyles seen on the red carpet are time-honored classics. Whether it’s modern day celebrity rocking old Hollywood bombshell waves or popstars slicking back their tresses for a sleek look, hairstyles like these are an absolute red carpet staple. From braided updos and flowy waves, the Oscars inspire the most romantic hair looks for any glamorous evening you have planned. Here at Hessions, we predict the looks we will see on this seasons Oscars Red Carpet.

Retro Wavy Hair

Victory rolls, twenties marcel waves and classic set curls have been seen everywhere from the Gucci catwalk show to the Golden Globes – but nostalgic hair-dos never go out of style. Watch out for this on the Oscars Red Carpet 2016.

Braided Hair

Braided hair is definitely having a moment. Braiding made a comeback at the Celine 2016 catwalk in the form of a sleek ponytail. The look is quite tomboyish, but polished and modern. We think braids will be a prominent look on this year’s catwalk.

The Victoria’s Secret Wave

The unwritten formula for Victoria’s Secret hair is that it must be glossy, bouncy, full, soft, and long. The overall look is sexy yet not impossible to create. The hair at Victoria’s Secret looks real. This is set be a big look on this years Red Carpet catwalk.
