We had the pleasure of teaming up with the super crew at Xpose Magazine and the TV3 show lately as they took four super ladies on a wonderful journey of self exploration when it came to revamping their hair and make up look according to their age category! We put together our artistic hair team and the fabulous BUFF Make Up team and you can see the results of the first big reveal for those in their 20’s features in the June issue on shelf now!
Shiny, A-lister hair is the top of every girl’s wish list yet in reality most of us are sporting dull and lack lustre locks. Whilst the lucky celebrities have personal hairdressers to help them achieve a glossy mane, us mere mortals have to bear the cross ourselves so Paul Hession has given us some quick and easy tips for injecting radiance to your hair that even Gwyneth Paltrow would be jealous of! Use a deep conditioning masque weekly to lock in moisture and add natural vitality to the hair shaft. Colour treated and highlighted hair gets easily damaged from the chemical abuse of colourants so opt for a product, such as Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque (€35.50), which will protect and enhance your colour for extra shine.
How you blow-dry and style your hair can also affect how silky it looks. For a gorgeous poker straight look like Gwyneth Paltrow the secret is to section by section, angle the hairdryer down the shaft whilst blow-drying, to flatten and smooth each strand, and finish each section with a blast of cool air to lock in the shine. For those with naturally curly hair, rinse off hair with cold water before drying to minimise frizz and then sparingly mist damp hair with a lightweight shine enhancing spray such as Redken Colour Extend Shine Rich (€25.50) and blow-dry hair using a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting to encourage natural, defined curls.
Finally, style your hair as normal and add some extra gloss to your do with celebrity favourite L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hair Spray (€7.99). Looking like a star has never been so easy!
We have been waiting, pray, hoping for sunshine for so long and now that it’s here we nearly don’t know what to do with ourselves! Well we are going to make sure you can tick hair care off your list with a few tips to keep your hair looking good in the soaring temperatures!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Conditioner is like water to hair so it is important to ramp up your conditioning duties during the summer months make sure to schedule conditioning treatments at least once a week! It is also important to drink plenty of liquids to keep roots and strands flush with fluids. Water will also keep your skin soft and plump. While it’s tempting to drink ice cold alcoholic drinks keep in mind that they can dehydrate skin and strands!
Split ends- be gone! Be religious about trims this summer, as the sun robs moisture from your tresses, it is important to have our ends trimmed every 4-6 weeks during the summer months! Frizzy hair is often the result of too much sun time to keep those ends healthy with regular trims!
Back off Heat! If you normally use hot styling tools, try and give your hair a rest during the summer months and let hair air dry whenever possible! Use this as an opportunity to create a ‘Boho’ look by braiding damp hair to create beautiful waves! If you just can’t live without those trusty hair straighteners make sure to use a leave-in conditioner designed to protect your hair against the heat!
Cover up! Whether you are in sunny Spain or just chilling in the back garden, hanging out in the sun without protection for your hair and scalp is the worst thing you can do. Use leave in hair products with SPF protection or cover up in style with a sassy floppy straw hat, the perfect accessory for any beach outfit!
So head out into the sun, and show off those glossy locks and don’t forget your SPF!!
Here at HessionHairdressing.com we want to keep up to date with what’s hot and what’s not, this week our guest blogger, the lovely and super talented Emma Henderson from award winning Irish beauty blog www.fluffandfripperies.com is going to fill us in on how to update our Make Up look for Spring/Summer!
Lightening Up: Changing Your Makeup As Well As Your Hair Colour, For Spring
Alexa may have bid farewell to her ombred locks, but I’m not ready to say buh-bye to balayage just yet. As we head into the warmer weather (well, a girl can dream) I’ll be going even lighter through the ends of my hair – and that means making a few tweaks to my make up routine, as well.
When my hair was a deep brunette all over, I favoured a more polished look and could wear bolder and richer tones. As well as being several shades lighter, my current style is grungier, and calls for a less-is-more kind of approach.
For eyes, I’ve been choosing taupes and browns over greys and blacks, for a toned down smokey eye. I swear by the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, €40, which has 12 chic neutral shades in a mix of mattes and shimmers.
Obviously my foundation shade didn’t change because my hair did, but I’ve switched from a medium-to-full coverage base to ones with a lighter and more natural effect. I’ve also ditched the mattes in favour of a more luminous finish. Current favourites include Kiehl’s Actively Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream, €29, and Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream, €33.50.
With lighter hair, I find that blusher shades in peach and coral are more flattering than rosier hues – not to mention bang on trend – and give skin a youthful, healthy glow. Buff Makeup’s powder blusher in Big O, €21.50, is the perfect shade (and handily, I can pick it up from Hessions while I’m having my hair done!).
With everything else pared back and toned down, I still like to rock a bit of colour on my lips. Anything goes but orange is the colour of the season, and it’s a surprisingly wearable one to boot. MAC’s new (limited edition) Fashion Sets collection includes a lipstick (€18), cream lipglass (€17.50) and lip pencil (€15.50) in Ablaze, a gorgeous suits-everyone orangey-apricot shade.
If you’re considering a colour change I hope that helps – don’t hesitate to tweet me @fluffyblog if you have any questions or would like to know more!
As promised, here is an update from the lovely Lorna Weightman and her gorgeous new hair! If you missed Lorna’s recent blog post you can check it out here
At HessionHairdressing.com we are huge fans of Lorna’s new look, but don’t take our word for it, read all about the big cut!
So its official, I have short hair! Taking the step to firstly, have my extensions removed, to then chopping the locks to my shoulders, was a pretty big adventure for me who has had long hair since I could say the word “fashion”.
But thankfully, I was in very safe hands. Taking time over the right shade is so important when it comes to colour, and Kelly worked her magic to lighten my colour just a little – in time for the summer months. I always like to have a lighter shade to catch some rays. Then Tara did the chop, but don’t worry, it was not traumatic at all (ANTM didn’t get a re run in the salon). We decided on a mix between Alexa Chung and Fearne Cotton – with some layers to add texture and restore the feel and look of my style. I also went to a whole new level of brave by cutting in a subtle fringe which is long enough to pin back if I want to.
I’m delighted with the new look, already my hair feels so much healthier and the shine is coming back. As well as looking good, it is so easy to manage and style, and Tara recommended I use dry shampoo to give it that “messy bob” look. I’m not exactly a low maintenance kind of girl, but I don’t like any kind of stress when it comes to my hair.
The end result, is a choppy long bob, for which I have received endless compliments over the last week! Who knows, maybe I’ll just keep it like this?
With Luscious Locks Love,
Last Saturday we took part in a super fundraiser organised by Clontarf locals Anto and his sister Carmel Murphy! Clontarf’s Shave, Wax or Dye event was organised to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and before the big night we had Anto visit the salon to get his hair ‘shaved and coloured’!
A huge success the fundraiser took place at Harry Byrne’s in Clontarf last weekend and it was a night filled up fun, entertainment and a lot of laughter. We had the pleasure and challenge of shaving a lot of heads and our friends at Great Lengths Extensions provided us with pink hair to make sure everyone could participate with ‘Pink your hair to show you care’ on the night! A huge congratulations to everyone involved, we’ll be laughing for weeks to come, the best type of medicine! With Hession Love x
With Kathryn Thomas taking home the most coveted accolade on the night at the VIP Style Awards, we still had a bevy of beauties to pamper and preen and put together the perfect dream team for hair and make up and with many visiting us in our Clontarf salon and our BUFF Make Up Suite they were able to move effortlessly between hair and make up so there was no rushing around the place to get organised for the big night!
First up was nominee, the gorgeous Lisa Cannon from Xpose, TV. Lisa wore a dress by Suzanne Neville and looked sensational in the figure hugging gown and old school glamour was order of the day for her hair and make up. There was a fantastic reaction to her overall look on the night!
Another lady hot to trot on the night was Clontarf local and all round beauty Ms Holly Carpenter who took to the red carpet in a Louise Kennedy creation. Effortlessly chic, Holly looked beautiful!
We haven’t yet managed to get our hands of Alison and Thalia separately just yet but we will post as soon as we do! Model and TV presenter, Alison Canavan a nominee on the night, looked spectacular, elegant, sophisticated and stylish the look was perfectly chic, simply stunning! Model Thalia Heffernan, also a nominee wore a striking and sparkling gown from Cari’s Closet and pulled it superbly, right on trend, youthful and looked a million dollars!
An honour to work with such a fantastic group of ultra stylish ladies! Until next….

Wow, what a busy 24 hours! As many of you will already know, the VIP style awards took place at the new and über glamorous Marker Hotel in Dublin. It’s a highlight in the social calender for many of Ireland’s most beautiful and famous faces and this year the style was second to none! We were lucky enough to have our artistic team ready for action and to tend to the tresses of some of the gorgeous ladies in advance of the big night and we had the honour of working with a regular friend and client of Hessions, Kathryn Thomas who was awarded the top prize on the night and voted the main VIP Style Award! And we can’t think of a more worthy winner. Kathryn wore a stunning dress by Lya Solis, hair by Hession Hairdressing and make up by BUFF Make Up! Congratulations Kathryn!
So we have decided to bring you a series of guest blogs with a host beauty and fashion lovers to tackle the all important issues of what to wear, what’s hot and what’s not here at HessionHairdressing.com and first up is one of Ireland’s leading fashion commentators based between Dublin and London Ms Lorna Weightman!
To Cut or Not to Cut?
Why is it that we ladies change our minds as often as we do? Without sounding too clichéd I am over-influenced by popular culture, even though I pioneer individual style, I know it’s silly isn’t it? Back in January, I was so excited to get Great Lengths hair extensions. The longer the better. I wanted long flowing locks, so I could embrace my inner Cheryl Cole. I got them in, just in time for fashion week, went off to London, had a great time, only to find out that the shorter cut was now in Vogue. Oh dear. How could I not have known this. The bob is back and in force.
I’m now on a daily trawl all over pinterest looking for hair inspiration and to see if I should take the plunge myself and cut almost a foot off my own hair. Now, look, I’m no Karlie Kloss to look at, but I think I can just about rock this look. Eventually. But it’s the scissors that scare me. The girl’s on America’s Next Top Model have nothing on me and my tears in hair salons.
Cutting my hair is kind of similar to me breaking up with a pair of well worn, but loved pair of shoes. I love them, but I have worn them to death and it’s time for them to go to the place where shoes go to die, i.e. the bin. My long hair has been a constant feature my whole life. If I cut it, I’ll look different and right now I can’t see myself with a shorter bob. So I tried the websites where you can upload a picture of yourself, and superimpose hair styles onto your image. This exercise did not go as well as planned, and in one instance, my hair looked more like “Sponge Bob” than “Katie Holmes bob”. So short of trying on a wig, I am no closer to visualising what I might look like.
But change is good, and it’s about time I made the cut. So this week, the extensions are coming out, and I am off to Hessions for a colour and a cut, just in time for a photoshoot for the Metro UK next week in London who have picked me as a stylish person to profile! So stay tuned for my next blog post when you can see the finished look!!!
