Get the most from your hair colour with our top tips!
Whether you’re blonde, brunette or redhead, coloured hair always requires extra care to keep it looking vibrant and fresh. Follow our top tips below to get the most out of your colour!
TIPS FOR BLONDES 1. Firstly when colouring your hair blonde always have it done professionally in a salon. 2. Deep condition often. If you’ve lightened your hair to be blonde and want to avoid it looking dry, use a deep conditioning treatment at least weekly to keep your hair hydrated. 3. Invest in a purple shampoo to prevent your hair colour from turning brassy which often happens with other shampoos that aren’t specifically formulated for blonde hair. 4. Get regular trims, blonde hair is more prone to breakage so you need to look after it.
TIPS FOR BRUNETTES 1. For beautiful shiny brunette hair whether coloured or natural, it is important that you keep it healthy. 2. Use professional products to maintain your hair in as they are specifically designed for your hair needs, and trim hair regularly. 3. Start by selecting the right shampoo and conditioner with the help of an expert in the salon. We recommend Kevin Murphy products and the Kerastase range. 4. When colouring your hair choosing a shade of brown that will suit your skin tone is the most important factor. Establish with your colourist whether to opt for a cool toned brown or a warm brown. Adding some highlights and lowlights underneath the hair will give it texture and multi tonal colour to soften your all over brunette colour.
TIPS FOR REDHEADS 1. This hair colour can be tricky to get right so if you’re not blessed with natural copper locks have a professional in a salon do it for you. 2. Wash your hair with sulfate-free, colour-safe shampoo and conditioner and rinse your hair with cool water to protect your hair from heat damage and add extra shine. 3. Use thermal protectant when heat styling your hair. This will dramatically reduce brittle and split ends. 4. Avoid the sun when possible – it’s always best to wear a hat in sunny weather and consider using a UV protectant spray for your hair. 5. Have a colour refresh service done in salon in between your root touch ups to keep your colour looking vibrant.
It’s that time of year once again, awards season has kicked off and we’re glued to the red carpet for top notch hair and beauty inspiration! There were so many fabulous hair styles at this weeks Golden Globes it’s so hard to pick our favourites but here are a few that caught our eye!
Brie’s gorgeous Hollywood waves are classic and timeless! We’ve seen a huge increase in demand for this style for Debs and special occasions and we can see why. We’re loving this sleek glossy look on Brie!
Emma Stone’s undone up do was a firm favourite at the Golden Globes. This style looks so effortless and utterly elegant. We can see this becoming a popular look for bridesmaids in 2017.
An up-do with height and braids? What’s not to love?! This unusual style is eye catching and adds some edge to an otherwise very feminine look.
Our list would not be complete without Irish beauty Ruth Negga. Not everyone can pull off a cropped style like Ruth but she absolutely rocks it! Slick, minimalist and modern, this look is a total winner for us!
This years MET Gala’s theme was Manus X Machina – Fashion in an Age of Technology, a theme which inspired some of the most daring and creative hairstyles we’ve seen on the red carpet in a long time!
Here are our top picks from the night:
Ciara’s metallic silver encrusted hair perfectly embodied the MET Gala theme. We love that she decided to have some fun with her hair and try something different. Ciara’s silver hair and dress combo definitely stood her apart from the crowd!
Although not as daring as Ciara’s look, this vampy bob on Taylor Swift marks a significant departure from her usual polished style so so she definitely earns points in that respect! Paired with an edgy dark lip and pale skin this tousled platinum blonde hairstyle reveals a side to Taylor we’ve never seen before!
Lupita’s ceiling scraping hair do was sure to turn heads last night. The stunning actress had a series of buns stacked vertically in her hair to create a showstopping look. Lupita was right to keep her makeup minimal and let this spectacle do all the talking!
The phrase ‘less is more’ certainly rings true with Kylie Jenner’s simple hair style. This slick understated bob perfectly frames Kylie’s face and adds a touch of class to her overall look. Glossy healthy hair never goes out of style and perfectly compliments Kylie’s lavish diamante dress.
Last night’s MET Gala presented the perfect opportunity for Emma Stone to debut her freshly dyed brunette locks. Emma’s new lopsided side swept bob is the perfect blend of modern and chic with hues of chestnut that compliment her skin tone beautifully. We love it!!
Start with your scarf wrapped around the back of your neck with the two loose ends at the top of your head above your forehead.
Cross these two ends over each other and twist so that they are tight.
Pull the ends tightly to the nape of your neck and secure them to the back of the scarf/ your hair with bobby pins. The High Ruffled Ponytail
Brush your hair thoroughly.
Tease the hair on your crown slightly by lifting a small section of your hair about midway to the crown and backcombing gently to add volume.
Gather your hair into a high pony tail being careful not to flatten your crown and secure with a bobbin.
Gently loosen strands around your crown for a more relaxed look.
Run a curling tongs through the ponytail to add further volume and waves.
Finish with a spritz of texturizing hairspray.
The Braided Side Pony
Gather your brushed hair on the side of your neck you would like your ponytail.
Take a small section of hair (about half an inch to an inch depending on the thickness of your hair)from the nape of your neck, along your hairline.
Split this small section into 3 even strands, form a braid and secure with a small clear elastic.
Pull the rest of your hair around the front of your shoulder and wrap the braid around it to form a ponytail.
Pin the end of the braid under your ponytail to secure – use several bobby pins for extra hold.

For what seems like forever, everyone was all about long, luscious and healthy locks, however since the New Year hit, everyone has been getting the chop. This 2015 trend has been given the clever name ‘The Lob’ and it is a ‘do’ that is slowly taking over the world!
The Lob is all over our social media accounts, with celebrities like Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Cheryl Fernadez-Versini all going for the new hair trend.
Here at Hessions we’re going to answer your questions surrounding the growingly popular ‘Lob’.
What is’ The Lob’? The Lob is an abbreviation of ‘The Long Bob’, basically this style is longer than your typical bob haircut.
Do I need thick hair to wear a lob?
Almost anyone can wear a bob, but discuss it with your stylist and they’ll tell you if you shouldn’t. With thin hair cutting your hair to this length will create far more volume than you ever would have had with longer hair, and you can also use texturizing sprays for a voluminous look if that’s the style you’re trying to go for.
The only people who we would advise to avoid the lob are those with extremely thick hair. Cutting this into incredibly thick hair could take a lot of time as well as thinning out of your gorgeous locks. If you do fancy going for something different this year with your thick hair, try slightly longer than the lob, possibly just past the shoulder to keep your natural texture.
What do I ask for in the hairdressers?
If you have seen a picture of the exact lob you want, be it Cheryl, Kim or anyone else, bring it with you and show it to your stylist. Don’t be afraid to discuss exactly what you want and listen to their advice, so you can get exactly the right lob for you!
How often will I have to get my hair cut?
A lob, being different from the original bob, if it gets any longer than the collar bone area, it can flip out at the bottom in an undesirable way, so with this particular haircut, you’re probably best getting a cut every 6 weeks or so.
We hope this helps answer any questions you might have before going for the chop and let 2015 be the year of the lob!

This year marks the eleventh year of Ireland’s biggest music festival- Electric Picnic, with many of you hitting Stradbally Estate for a weekend of fun we thought we would provide you lovely ladies with some hair tips so you will look picture perfect in your festival selfies!
At any festival having fun should always number one on your list, but you might as well look good while you are dancing to your favourite bands! Check out Hession’s Festival Hair guide below!
On the day of arrival we suggest you make the most of your clean fresh hair and wear it down! Messy hair is always in style at festivals so there is no need to worry if you end up with a windswept look! Add some cute plaits throughout your hair for a fun festival look!
Depending on the weather your hair might be starting to look abit crazy on day two, we suggest a simple plait you can’t go wrong with this look and there is no need to worry about touch ups during the day as the messier it is the better it looks!
Top Tip: Dry shampoo is your best friend at a festival to freshen up hair!
A messy bun is the perfect way to disguise greasy locks so it is the perfect look for day 3, turn your head upside down, gather hair into a pony tail and twist into a bun- this look can be achieved in seconds. Adding a floral crown or head scarf creates a funky vibe to the look. With a messy bun you and your hair will be able to stand the test of time at any festival!
Have a great weekend and be safe from all the team at Hessions

The most stylish celebrities and TV personalities hit the red carpet for the thirteenth VIP Style awards at the weekend and we were thrilled that Hessions and the BUFF Make-Up Suite got a chance to preen and pamper several of the worthy beauties for the night! It was all hands on deck for hair and makeup and we were thrilled to have the wonderful makeup artist Tara O’Farrell work from our suite on the day. 2011 Miss Ireland winner and Britain & Ireland’s next top model Favourite, Holly Carpenter was among some of the great friends of the salon to cross our doors on the day of the VIP awards. Not that Holly needs much help to look her best her hair looked great and she pulled off a fantastic look in an emerald green jump suit.
Yummy Mummy and model Pippa O Connor Ormond was looking more glamorous than ever in an angelic floor length white gown from The Ivory Closet and we were thrilled to look after her loose tumbling hair for the night. Tara created the master piece face using a pop of colour on Pippa’s lips with our Posie lipstick.
Although many cross our doors and end up leaving delighted with our own VIP touch we give to each individual client, we couldn’t help feeling delighted ourselves having a good friend of the salon, TV Presenter Anna Daly in with us for her hair and make-up for the big night. When we saw her dress on her we were floored, it was amazing and so on trend which suited us because the make-up and hair look we gave her added to the shimmer goddess she was.
Another great night and another successful year for the VIP style awards, until next year!

We have been long time fans of the gorgeous Holly Carpenter and lucky to call her a friend of the salon. Recently Holly did a stunning shoot with VIP Magazine after competing in Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model and we were on hand to tend to the famous tresses at the plush Marker Hotel. Holly is a natural beauty and on the day her hair reflected the same. We went for natural looks and girl next door pony tail, loose tumbling waves and a sleek low bun…all looks very achievable at home! Holly also sported BUFF Make Up with make up artist Lara Ford on hand.
It’s been a busy few weeks here at Hession Hairdressing and our artistic team have been out on shoots the length and breath of the country! As always we like to share some of the great work that has featured and first up this month is the gorgeous Decades of Beauty make over featured in Xpose magazine. We were thrilled to look after 4 wonderful candidates for Xpose magazine during the summer and delighted to see another decade featured recently in the magazine. With the hair make over courtesy of Paul and our gorgeous BUFF Make Up featured, the final result was stunning!
